# Temporary voice channels

> Let members create their own private-feeling voice channels by joining a hub channel.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Temporary voice channels are **rolling out**. The dashboard page for them is currently marked **Soon**, so setup options may not be available to your server yet. This page explains how the feature behaves.

With temporary voice channels, members don't need a moderator to get a voice room. They join a special **hub channel**, and the bot instantly creates a new voice channel just for them and moves them into it.

## How it works

**1. A member joins the hub**

The hub is a normal voice channel that an admin marked as a hub.

**2. A new channel is created**

The bot creates a voice channel named after the member, in the hub's category, and moves them in automatically.

**3. The member owns it**

The owner can manage the channel: rename it, set a user limit, mute or deafen others, and more. See the controls below.

**4. It cleans itself up**

When everyone has left, the channel is **deleted automatically**.

## Naming

The channel name comes from a pattern. These placeholders are replaced for each member:

| Placeholder | Becomes |
| - | - |
| `[displayName]` | The member's server display name |
| `[userName]` | The member's username |
| `[userId]` | The member's ID |

The default pattern shows the owner's name followed by "Channel". Names are limited to 100 characters.

## Rules and defaults

| Rule | Behavior |
| - | - |
| Channels per member | 1 by default; a hub can allow up to 5. |
| Already at your limit? | Joining the hub again moves you back to your existing channel instead of creating another. |
| User limit | Default **unlimited** (0). |
| Audio quality (bitrate) | Default 64 kbps, never above what your server's boost level allows: **96 kbps** (no boosts), **128 kbps** (level 1), **256 kbps** (level 2) or **384 kbps** (level 3). |
| Video quality | Auto, or Full. |
| Owner leaves | If **auto transfer** is on and others remain, ownership passes to someone still in the channel. Otherwise the owner simply leaves it. |

> [!NOTE]
>
> While a member owns a channel from a hub, the hub is locked for them, so they can't spam new channels. It unlocks when their channel is deleted or they hand it over.

## What the owner can control

Each control can be switched on or off by the admin for a hub.

> [card] Channel
>
> Rename, user limit, bitrate, region, slowmode, voice status, video quality, NSFW (off by default).

> [card] Privacy
>
> Lock the channel, hide it, invite someone (creates an invite and DMs them).

> [card] People
>
> Kick, ban, mute and deafen members in the channel.

> [card] Ownership
>
> Transfer the channel to another member, or **claim** it when the owner is gone.

## What the bot needs

The bot must be able to **Manage Channels**, **Move Members**, **Mute Members**, **Deafen Members**, **View Channel** and **Connect** in the hub's category.

> [!WARNING]
>
> If the bot can't create the channel or move the member, nothing is left behind: a half-created channel is deleted straight away.
